Wieland Schmidt
Germany (DDR)
Wieland Schmidt, f. 23. dec. 1953, vogtede
håndboldmålet for SC Magdeburg i DDR i perioden 1974-1989. Det blev til 6
mesterskaber. På hjemmebanen Hermann-Gieseler-Halle forblev SC Magdeburg
ubesejret i hele perioden; unægtelig en fantastisk rekord. Afsluttede sin
karriere i SG Hameln i 1992.
Wieland Schmidt, b. 23. Dec. 1953, was the constant
goalkeeper at the famous Eastgerman handballteam from SC Magdeburg in the period
of 1974- 89. The homeground was the Hermann-Gieseler-Halle, on which no plays
were lost in the period. What a record! - He ended up his great handball-career
at SG Hameln in 1992. During that time he succeeded 276 National caps being the
safe goalkeeper of the DDR-handball-nationalteam. The peak was of course the
Gold Medal at the Olympic Games in Moscow 1980.
Germany has had many
outstanding goalkeepers - not only in football - however in handball as well.
Among the best were Andreas Thiel and Henning Fritz. - Wieland Schmidt had his
class and must be at the top of the scale. - With Henning Fritz he managed a
book "Halten and Siegen" in 1995.
Facing the game from the spectators
seat the choice about the very best handball-goalkeeper ever is very close, but
even though easy:
Wieland Schmidt
