Holland-Amerikaliniens tidligere bygning blev opført
i 1949 på ruinerne af en lagerbygning på Wilhelmina kajen i Rotterdams centrale
havneområde. De mange glasfacader i husets kvadrat giver nogle enestående
havnelooks.
Hotellets værelser er helt specielle og det samme er den
store restaurant samt tilhørende bar. Det er forståeligt et tilløbsstykke.
Siddende i stueetagens restaurant- og barareal kan man f.eks. forestille sig de
mange mennesker og immigranter, der tidligere brugte denne sal som afgang til de
forjættede nybygger-områder i vest og øst. Det skønnes, at omkring 500.000
nederlændinge har passeret denne hal på vej til en ny (og bedre?) tilværelse i
USA, Canada, Australien og New Zealand i perioden 1946-1976. Den gang kom de
ikke sejlende til hotellet i vandtaxa, men transporten til Wilhelmina kajen var

On the left bank of the city on the Maas, a start
has been made with the realization of the new plans for this area, the ‘Kop van
Zuid’. This will be the largest project the centre of Rotterdam will experience
in the next twenty years. Here, a Rotterdam hotel opened its doors in the spring
of 1993: Hotel New York. A new Rotterdam hotel, housed in a historic
Rotterdam building some hundred years ago. The building was to serve as head
office of the Holland-Amerika Lijn reached completion. In 1984, the building was
sold, after which it stood empty for ten years…
IN 1993 - HOTEL NEW
YORK Hotel New York is a modern hotel and café-restaurant with 72 rooms and 7
function rooms, situated in one of the most attractive spots in Rotterdam, a
location with new town planning developments, international in scale. It is not
the intention of HNY to look back nostalgically and capture the grandeur of
hotels of yesteryear. Rather, it wants to bring to life the hospitality and the
elegance of travel back then, in its own way.
My personal impression goes
back to my 50 years birthday a rough Januaryday in 1999, my very first meeting
with the old and marvellous building. In connection with the harbor 75-years
Jubilee in Sept. 2007 (including the beautiful Cuban-singer Gloria Estafan), I
guested the great hotel for the second time.
